On Sunday 22nd December 2019 I woke up at 4am (unintentionally) as I have been having trouble sleeping lately. I couldn't get back to sleep so made a snap decision to go out to Brisbane Airport to catch the early morning international arrivals. As I drove to the airport, a blood red sun rose over Briabane CBD, caused by bushfires burning in the area over recent weeks. I hoped to capture an aircraft with the red sun in frame but by the time I arrived it had changed to a dull yellow glow, nowhere near as striking as the red ball I had seen earlier. The light smoke haze had the advantage of acting as a diffuser, making for nicer light on the fuselages with less harsh glare on the light-coloured schemes. Highlight of the morning was the Emirates A380, which made me utter a "wow" as the whale hove into view over a stand of trees. That is one big aircraft when you're a hundred metres from its landing track. Other interesting aircraft were A330s from China Southern, China Eastern and Malaysia Airlines, a Singapore Airlines A350 and a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Qantas. There was also the usual bunch of Tigerair A320, Virgin Australia and Qantas B737. I managed to add a few new registrations I hadn't photographed before, including the Qantas retro "Ochre" livery B737 named after recent company CEO and board member, James Strong. This turned out to be a great morning, nice light and close to the aircraft on landing approach made for great shots - one of my best outings yet at Brisbane airport.
