On Thursday 1st October 2020 I took a day off work and ventured out to RAAF Base Amberley, near the town of Ipswich in Queensland, Australia. There was no specific exercise on that day, but plenty of good action for me to photograph. Lots of C-17A Globemaster III shots with a couple going out for a couple of hours then returning for a few touch and go circuits. And when these guys do touch and go - they really mean touch and go! The landing gear was only on the ground for a few metres after touching down before the big machine powered up and lifted off again. The first takeoff of the morning must have been a tactical STOL practice, I was stunned by how quickly the big girl got up into the sky. Other than the C-17 there were some F/A-18F Super Hornet flying, eight aircraft blasted off for Townsville for a two week exercise but I was in the wrong position to capture these very well. I got one Alenia C-27J transport taking off and one KC-30 MRTT returning to base after tanking some of the C-17s out over the Timor Sea.
