On Saturday 17th March 2018 I made my first trip to Lake Eden, North Lakes on the north side of Brisbane. The location looked good on eBird, with over 120 species logged. It turned out to be better than I would have expected for a suburban lake. Admittedly many of the birds were found a few hundred metres from the main lake in a swamp, but the main lake turned out some great birds and I was able to get really close to several of those. The highlight is definitely the Little Wattlebird, which is lifer number 169 for me. I didn't know these birds were found in Brisbane until someone recently mentioned they were at Lake Eden, they were my target species for the day and I was stoked to get really close to them. Other hightlights were having a Little Black Cormorant come really close to me while hunting in the lake (take a look at that emerald eye), and male Superb and Red-Backed Fairy-Wrens that were the closest I've even been to them. The Banksia swamp area at the western end of the lake turned out to be very busy, with Little Wattlebirds, Little Friarbirds and Noisy Miners chasing each other constantly, and a single Noisy Friarbird made an appearance. All in all a pretty good location, several habitat types in a compact size, some good swamp habitat nearby and some calm birds - I'll be back there really soon.
