A short outing to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt. Coot-Tha to see if I could find a cute little baby Australasian Grebe that the resident pair had raised. Well I certainly found this cute and very cool little customer, his parents sheltering with the chick in a corner of the pond, and fortunately close to the edge and in good light that afternoon. The parents took turns to stand guard with the other hunting for fish. The one on guard alert and watching for any interlopers, the stripey chick casually floating around behind the parent. I was lucky enough to see one parent return with a small fish and feed it to the chick. I understand that young waterfowl born on this pond have a high mortality rate, mainly due to large Eel that inhabit the pond. This is likely the last remaining of several chicks born to this family. For me this was a very enjoyable outing, the parents unworried by my presence and the very cute little chick seemingly interested in what I was up to a few metres away - this is why I love birding.
