20200321-MMPI0064 - Kianawah Road Wetlands
On Saturday 21st March 2020 I met up with a birding buddy at Kianawah Road Wetlands in the Brisbane suburb of Hemmant. The plan was to arrive around sunrise as this lagoon is a great spot for refelction shots of wading waterbirds, as the sun rises behind you and the water is quite shallow and still. The mud was a bit sticky so I wasn't able to lie down as I had hoped to shoot along the waterline, but I made do by squatting down as low as I could. The birds didn't disappoint - lots of Pied Stilts (Himantopus leucocephalus) and one particular Great Egret (Ardea alba) that at times was displaying some beautiful remnant breeding plumage. My favourite shots of the outing were a Pied Stilt looking for food with its bill touching the water and the Great Egret displaying its breeding plumage, both with good reflections. I also like the shot of the Pied Stilts in flight in a small flock, they look amusing with their long, bright pink legs trailing far out behind them. Later we went just around the corner to check out a wetland I hadn't visited before. There I managed a nice shot of a Little Black Cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) perching on a weathered fencepost on the lagoon, and a Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) in flight.
