ON Saturday 23rd August 2020 I went to my birding favourite spot for reflections, Kianawah Road Wetlands at Hemmant in Queensland, Australia. At sunrise the sun comes up at your back and the shallow, still water which attracts lots of waders allows for excellent reflections. I was disappointed to arrive to find none of the Pied Stilts, Red-necked Avocets or Erget/Heron species that I was hoping for were in attendence. Things weren't too bad though, as there were a pair of tiny Black-fronted Dotterel which I set my sights on getting closer to that I had been able to in the past. They are flighty and hard to get close to as they run here and there on the hunt for food on the mudflats and shallows. I also captured shots of a Masked Lapwing with reflections and on the mudflat. After this I moved about 1Km away to another wetland at a nearby secondary college to see what might be found there. I got some nice shots of a pair of Little Pied Cormorant in an interesting dead tree, and a Little Black Cormorant on an old fence post on the lagoon. My last stop was then just around the corner to Sandy Camp Road Wetlands in the suburb of Wynnum. There I ran into a fellow I have met before, together with his cousin we roamed around for a couple of hours. I didn;t capture many shots there, but a Rainbow Bee-eater calling from a dead branch in nice light and a couple of Dusky Moorhen on small tufts in a lagoon. We were fortunate to see one of the adult Eastern Osprey return to the nest then do a couple of laps overhead. Most of those shots wwere no good save for a few after it perched on the side of the nest. Another enjoyable morning outing, some nice light and good company. Now if only I could come to grips with my new camera gear and get some more keepers...
