On Saturday 11th September 2021 I visited the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-Tha, a 5Km from the Brisbane CBD. My primary aim today was to check if there were any recent hatchlings of waterfowl or Masked Lapwings. secondary was to just get out and take some photos of birds, something I haven't done that much of this year and I was missing. I was surprised by lack of hatchlings, although some species were mating while I was there so perhaps in a month there will be more around. A pair of Masked Lapwing were protecting a single fledgling, a pair of Pacific Black Duck swam right by me with a single duckling, and a female Maned Duck had a trio of ducklings. A pair of Royal Spoonbill landed in a large tree, I got one good shot of one of them. The resident pair of Australasian Grebe were my stars of the day, I laid down at the edge of the main lake and waited until they came eventually close. It took some time but I was rewarded with some nice shots of these lovely birds in nice light. An enjoyable morning jaunt for me, not that many birds to photograph but definitely a worthwhile reconnaisance visit with a few nice shots to take home.
